Board of Directors

Steven Thornton (Chairman)

Steve Thornton was most recently the President and Chief Executive Officer of Excelsior Medical Corporation, based in New Jersey, USA. He has over 35 years in senior management positions across the healthcare industry, both in large established businesses with international operations and start-up companies. He has held senior management and executive leadership roles with Eli Lilly, Bayer, Elan, SkyePharma Inc. and Bioniche Pharma. In these roles, Mr. Thornton managed and led businesses in the US, Europe, Australia, Israel and South Africa. Steve joined the board of X-BOLT Orthopaedics in 2013 and has been Chairman since 2016.

Dr. Brian Thornes (CEO)

Dr Brian Thornes is a former orthopaedic surgeon with c.17 years of clinical experience. He is the Founder and Chief Executive of X-BOLT®. Previously in 2000, Dr. Thornes invented and developed the Tightrope ankle syndesmosis device, now licenced to Arthrex. The Tightrope has been successfully implanted in over 200,000 patients worldwide and has been a ‘game changer’ in the way that ankle synesmosis injuries and high ankle sprains are now treated. Recent randomised controlled clinical trials have shown the Tightrope to be the new gold standard in syndesmosis fixation, with better outcomes and less reoperations versus conventional syndesmosis screw treatment. Similarly, the X-BOLT® is predicted to revolutionise hip fracture fixation with better outcomes and less reoperations.

Dr. Andrew Goldberg

Dr. Andrew Goldberg is a fellowship trained Orthopaedic Surgeon. His current post is Clinical Senior Lecturer in Trauma & Orthopaedics in the Division of Surgery for UCL and Honorary Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon working at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Middlesex, United Kingdom. Dr. Goldberg holds a number of additional positions including membership of the Outcomes Committee of the British Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society, membership of the editorial board for The UK National Joint Registry (NJR), he is the musculoskeletal lead for the FARR Institute and an advisor to the Wellington Hospital in London. He was awarded an OBE in the 2011 Queen’s New Year’s Honours List for services to medicine.

Jonathan Moore

Johnathan Moore is a financial director with substantial board level experience. He is a qualified accountant with over 20 years’ experience gained in a number of commercial environments including property development, corporate finance and professional practice. He has a proven track record in initiating, facilitating and completing a variety of corporate transactions.

Declan Kennedy

Declan Kennedy is a seasoned early stage investor and entrepreneur. Declan qualified as an accountant and was previously an investment banker with Barclays Capital until he became involved with start-up companies in the UK, US and Ireland full time in 2007. Declan is a Co-Founder and the CEO of StitcherAds, a Facebook advertising start-up which has raised c. €5m in venture funding to date. Declan joined the board of X-BOLT Orthopaedics in 2008.

Dr. Maeve Thornes

Dr. Maeve Thornes is a consultant Histopathologist at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin and with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. She has 20 years experience in medical research and has a number of published papers. She is also involved in laboratory internal audit and accreditation, and undergraduate and post-graduate medical education with the RCSI.
